What to Bring to Your First Visit

A neurology appointment is most productive when our team has the right information up front. For your first visit, please bring:

• A government-issued photo ID
• Your insurance card
• A list of your current medications and dosages
• Records from prior neurology, primary care, or specialty visits if available
• Any prior brain or spine imaging (MRI, CT) on CD, USB, or via your prior provider’s patient portal
• A brief written summary of your symptoms: when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect daily life

If you don’t have all of this, come anyway. Our team can request prior records on your behalf.

What Happens at a Neurology Appointment

Your neurologist will review your symptoms and medical history in detail, then perform a neurological exam, typically assessing strength, reflexes, sensation, coordination, balance, eye movements, and cognitive function relevant to your concerns. Depending on what your provider finds, the next step may be in-office diagnostic testing (such as EEG, EMG, nerve conduction studies, or imaging referrals), starting a treatment plan, or scheduling a follow-up to discuss results and options.

Most patients leave the first visit with a clearer understanding of what’s going on, what tests (if any) are needed, and a working plan for next steps.

When to Skip Scheduling and Go to the ER

A neurology consultation is for ongoing or non-emergent neurological concerns. If you are experiencing any of the following, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately rather than waiting for an appointment:

• Sudden severe headache, especially the worst headache of your life
• Sudden weakness, numbness, or paralysis on one side of the body
• Sudden difficulty speaking, slurred speech, or trouble understanding others
• Sudden vision loss or double vision
• Sudden severe dizziness with inability to walk
• A first-ever seizure, or a seizure lasting longer than five minutes
• Head injury with loss of consciousness, confusion, or repeated vomiting

These can be signs of stroke or other emergencies where minutes matter.
